Graphic designer, illustrator and lino print artist Alice Pugini is relocating her Block & Branch studio from Amsterdam to Rome, marking ten years in professional design with a move back to the city that has always shaped her work.
Alice Pugini has spent ten years in Amsterdam. Bikes and canals, the particular quality of light on flat Dutch water, a decade of building a practice that spans graphic design, illustration and the ancient art-inspired lino prints she makes under the name Block & Branch. Now she is moving back to Rome.
The decision, she says, ultimately came down to trusting her gut. Rome has always been the wellspring: the Roman and Greek art that runs through her print work, the art education she received there that covered technical drawing, sculpture and art history before she moved to London for her degree in Graphic Communication Design. Returning to it feels less like going backwards and more like closing a circle and starting a larger one.
For collectors of her prints, there is a practical upside. Work inspired by the Eternal City will soon be sent directly from it.
The move coincides with a second milestone: this year marks a full decade since Pugini’s first official job as a graphic designer. It is a span of time that has seen printmaking become an increasingly important part of her practice alongside her design and illustration work, the two strands informing each other in the particular way that happens when someone is genuinely curious about what each medium can do. To mark the anniversary, she is building a new website, and she is inviting input on what it should become.
Rome has been waiting. The food has certainly been waiting. And for anyone who has followed the layered, historically rooted world of Block & Branch, the prospect of what new ideas the city might bring to the prints is a genuinely exciting one.
