Andromeda is a new print by award-winning contemporary artist Rosie Emerson. The piece is a stunning edition of only 16 hand painted screen prints, which with added diamond dust, are a fine example of Rosie’s alchemistic approach to printmaking.
Inspired by her love of museums, architecture, theatre, silhouettes, shrines and rituals, Rosie uses dramatic lighting, hand made costumes, set and prop making alongside printmaking and painting to create genre defying prints. Her subjects range from well known icons to models, actors, dancers, friends, which she photographs in her studio and brings to life through numerous different print techniques. Her screen prints are delicately embellished with bronze powders and more unusual materials including charcoal powder, ash, and saw dust. These textural prints shift the focus of printmaking from precision and replication, to the creation of unique, hand-finished piece.
Featuring the singer-songwriter Ebony Buckle who Rosie photographed in her studio last year, Andromeda was printed by hand in Brighton and finished with diamond dust to create some extra sparkle. These celestial-inspired prints shimmer and catch the light as you move around them.
Andromeda was released especially for the Black Magic exhibition, taking place from 22/10 through to 21/11 2021 at Paxton+Glew in Brighton. Black Magic will bring together 7 UK artists (Rosco Brittin, Rosie Emerson, Lee Eelus, Pam Glew, Richard Heeps, Rhea Thierstein, and Fiona Wilson) who take inspiration from the dark, mythology, and the ephemeral.
The preview night takes place on Thursday 21 October 6-9.30pm.
