Dasha Starostin is an illustrator and visual artist originally from Moldova, and now based in Amsterdam. Working across screen printing, Risograph, and sublimation, printing is one of Dasha’s favourite ways to bring her stories to life and share them with others. Her creations cover the mediums of zines, posters, installations, and textiles.
She states; “Transforming my illustrations into real-life objects is an essential part of the creative process. I sculpt paper, print on wood, and bookbind fabric. Dimensions of subject matter are metaphorically translated through materials, space, and light.”
This year Dasha graduated from Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam, with an Illustration Honours – Visual Culture. During that time she worked as an assistant in a printmaking studio where she enjoyed thinking about the most suitable printing or bookmaking technique for each artist’s concept. She also learned a lot about printmaking whilst interning at Wobby.Club, a Risograph printed magazine. Today, Dasha is part of an art collective with a focus on self-publishing, ZIJN, and also co-curates CrossComix festival.
In love with the process of folding paper, Dasha’s creative practice often involves books. She uses these publications as a social instrument, inviting the audience to write in them, pass around, reflect, and co-create with the author. Aesthetically, her work is inspired by buildings, constructions, and staircases, displaying the influence of her family of architects on her work.
Looking to the future, Dasha hopes to publish an illustrated book and set up a publishing place in Amsterdam.
