Being Trapped Is Not Always Negative: Supatida Sutiratana’s TRAP

posted by POP Members May 18, 2026

New York-based Thai graphic designer Supatida Sutiratana develops an experimental risograph poster series that transforms emotional entrapment, regret and affection into fragmented typographic compositions that sit between language and feeling.

The word trap tends to carry a single meaning: something bad. Supatida Sutiratana is more interested in the ambivalence.

“TRAP explores the idea that being trapped is not always negative,” she says. “Certain emotions, memories, and relationships can hold us in place while also giving us comfort, identity, and meaning.”

That complexity, the way attachment can be simultaneously protective and restrictive, is the emotional territory the project inhabits.

Developed in 2024 as an experimental poster series, TRAP uses typography as its primary material, moving it far beyond legibility into something closer to texture and emotional structure. Letterforms are fragmented, layered and reconstructed into dense compositions that hold clarity and chaos in tension, precision alongside distortion. Recurring graphic elements, sharp forms, timer-like symbols, gradients and explosive icons, run through the series as a visual vocabulary of urgency, pressure and the passing of time. Together they translate internal states, regret, affection, vulnerability, the weight of specific moments, into a visual language that reads as much as it means.

Visually, the work combines retro and contemporary aesthetics while drawing from the material qualities of risograph printing: vibrant overlays, imperfect registration, the productive unpredictability of the process. Developed and printed in collaboration with Lucky Risograph, the series extends across print and exhibition contexts, having been shown at The Other Art Fair and Google Art.

Supatida Sutiratana is a Thai graphic designer based in New York City, working across branding, typography and print. She is a Visual Designer at VMGROUPE and co-founder of Midnight Project, LLC.
