Designer, researcher and transmedia artist Feixue Mei brings together exhibitions, public conversations, workshops, artist books and an online forum across James Madison University and Boundless Bound Publishing this autumn, exploring what happens to cultural heritage, publishing and identity when they cross generations, places and communities.
传 (chuán) means to transmit, pass on, circulate, carry. It is the word at the centre of Feixue Mei’s autumn programme, and it captures precisely what the project is asking: what happens when cultural material moves? Across generations. Across places. Across formats. Across the distance between where something originated and where it is encountered next.
传/Chuán & Boundless Bound Publishing: Dialogues Across Heritage, Publishing, and Practice is a fall programme unfolding across James Madison University and Boundless Bound Publishing, the independent publishing and graphic design research platform Mei founded. It brings together artists, designers, archivists, educators and independent publishers from institutions including UVA, George Mason University, VCUarts, Now Place and 51 Personae.

The centrepiece exhibition, 传/Chuán: Dialogues with Chinese Cultural Heritage, places historical and archival objects from collections at James Madison University, the University of Virginia and George Mason University alongside contemporary books, printed matter and creative practice. Garments, artist books, comics, porcelain, paintings and poetry are brought into new visual and material relationships, creating connections between collecting, publication, display and interpretation that do not exist anywhere else. The exhibition does not simply display objects. It asks what those objects become when placed in conversation with each other and with the people looking at them now.
“I’m interested in publishing as a form of circulation,” Mei says, “how images, texts, objects, and cultural memory move across books, exhibitions, screens, archives, and different communities. 传/Chuán brings those forms into conversation and asks what new relationships can emerge through that movement.” Boundless Bound Publishing, which shapes the programme’s wider framework, treats publishing as more than the production of books: a way of connecting people, materials, histories and places through printed matter, public programmes, exhibitions and networked exchange.

The public component open to everyone is the Boundless Bound Online Forum on 14 and 15 October 2026. Across three panels, participants from UVA, George Mason University, James Madison University, Messiah University, VCUarts, Now Place and 51 Personae will discuss objects and archives, heritage and contemporary creative practice, and independent publishing across Chinese and diasporic contexts. Registration is open now.
