Kim Minuti is a printmaker based in leafy Forest Hill, South East London. Originally trained in Screen Print and Surface Pattern Design from the University of Leeds, Bretton Hall, Kim has developed her own studio practice alongside her career in art teaching. Her work encourages its viewer to take note of the ‘small things’ in the places that surround and shape us.
“Our urban surroundings are often a source of delight. The rhythm of seasonal change, ash seeds scattered on the ground, dispersed by the wind; find themselves outlining doorways and cracks in pavements. The small things form a narrative, a lyrical contrast to our increasingly man-made environments. The work becomes a visual inquiry of how these two worlds co-exist.”
Kim utilises leaves, stems, and seeds that she has collected to form the direct positives for her exposed screens. She uses this process to form a variety of lines, textures, and shapes; Kim endeavours without too much interference. The printmaker’s artworks celebrate universality; key forms within the images are drawn from the botanical environment, which contrasts with the abstraction of shapes as key details are absent. The relation of the imagery to the outside world and one’s connection to nature is vital to the integrity of Kim’s work, and she believes our interior spaces can help to celebrate these vital connections, not necessarily just through a visual process.
More recently, Kim’s prints explore hybrid printmaking approaches through a rich process of layering, often with the addition of screen print veneers and stitching. She explains; “I have always struggled with the pigeonholing of processes and my art practice is intrinsically explored through improvisation and experimentation, ‘what if’ is an immensely powerful and seductive expression“. Kim predominantly works with monotype printing, which starts with the process of using leaves directly through an etching press to form subtly embossed layers. This is where her stories begin to take shape; “screen printing allows me to celebrate the almost playful personality of the botanical world, in contrast to the mechanised nature of the process itself“.
Kim’s designs are not always preconceived and grow as organically as the work itself. It is this process of organic exploration where she feels most at home and happily lost at the same time. Decisions are often made quickly, and the element of chance in the making process pays homage to the cyclical change outside.
Printmaking is a medium and a vehicle through which Kim can document and enchant. The printmaker hopes to further develop her practice through exploring scale, as well as surface. She is curious about combinations of materials, and is looking to work with a laser cutting process, as well as the potential for collaborative based work. Recent work has also been exhibited at Art@57 in East Dulwich, and the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair.
