Taking place at Damn Fine Print, Dublin, earlier this year, Let’s Dance was an exhibition by Brian Giles, aka Sonofafox. The exhibition showcased a new body of work with the aim to express the message that “everyone needs to keep moving forward in the best way they can“.
“I think we’re all going through a massive moment of change collectively with lockdown and social distance. It’s been an exhausting year for sure so far, and I don’t think we’ll be the same after, but that doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. I figured the best way to convey this positive message was through a depiction of the motion of dance. I love how the movement of dancing can bring both collective and individual positive energy.”
Inspired by the colourful memories of nights out, the works are an ode to the days of the past, whilst simultaneously look forward to the time when we can enjoy those moments again in company and unison. As a big fan of strong graphic imagery, colour and texture, for this series Brian played around and developed imagery of blurred dancing motions that he captured with a camera set up in his studio space. After taking the photographs he developed them further with a CMYK four-colour set up. “The realisation that I could convey multiple colours, with a mixture of three or four layers was huge for me, and the blending of the layers with the halftone bitmaps worked so well together, especially with the blurred imagery” states the printmaker. Photographs splashed with colour, and overlaid with layers of ink, resulted in images of movement, excitement and passion that perfectly convey the central theme of positivity.
A long-time Damn Fine Print member Sonofafox is an Irish Printmaker and Graphic Designer based in Dublin. Through the process of screen printing, he loves to experiment with graphic abstract textures and intense colour combinations, often combining these elements to produce bold and colourful artworks.
