Amsterdam creative strategy agency Dawn has launched a city-wide brand campaign for De Balie, the 45-year-old cultural institution at the heart of the city’s public debate scene. The campaign, running under the line ‘Why make it easy?’, makes a case for discomfort, doubt and the value of not having the answers.
De Balie has spent 45 years bringing together art, film, politics and public debate at its Leidseplein venue in Amsterdam. More than 30 programmes a month, subjects that many institutions would sidestep and an approach that treats uncertainty as a virtue rather than a problem to be managed. The question was how to communicate that in a moment when much of public discourse is flattened by echo chambers and AI-generated takes.

Dawn’s answer was to make the discomfort the offer. The campaign line, ‘Why make it easy?’, doesn’t promise comfort or clarity. It promises the opposite: that an evening at De Balie will leave you with more questions than you arrived with, that the greatest minds are there to be questioned, and that the most rewarding insights rarely come easily.
Rolling out across Amsterdam, the campaign pairs provocative copy lines including ‘Prove yourself wrong’ and ‘For a healthy dose of Doubt’ with bold graphic imagery and surreal photography by Woody Bos and Anna Claassen. The visual language matches the intellectual proposition: confident, a little unsettling, designed to stop rather than reassure.

Yoeri Albrecht, General and Artistic Director at De Balie, describes what the campaign captures: “It’s always exciting, and even a little risky, to bring people together in the same room. We cover a huge range of subjects, often sensitive ones, and leave room for strong opinions, spontaneity and questions. The conversations can be moving, uncomfortable or anything in between. With more than 30 programmes every month, we create space every day for vulnerability, experimentation and plenty of surprise. We believe those moments are fundamental to keeping us moving forward, both as individuals and as a society. Dawn has captured that brilliantly.”
Jurian van der Hoeven, Strategist and Managing Partner at Dawn, frames the campaign in terms that apply to the agency’s own practice as much as to the institution: “The best work happens when you operate at the edge of what you know. That’s true for us as creatives and as an agency, but it’s also true for us as visitors to De Balie. The fact that it takes effort, feels complicated and raises questions is precisely the point. With De Balie’s clever programming and distinctive place in Amsterdam’s cultural landscape, you don’t need much more than a provocative invitation to come and spend an evening feeling a little stupid.”

Dawn is a recently re-independent strategic and creative brand agency based in Amsterdam, and the first B Corp-certified agency in the Netherlands. The agency works with clients including Vattenfall, Greenpeace and VluchtelingenWerk on brand strategy, identity, campaigns and orchestration.
